Why this course?
Effective risk management is more than completing a risk assessment or adding an item to a risk register. It requires people to understand the risk, evaluate the controls already in place and make informed decisions about what needs to happen next.

This programme provides a practical introduction to the ISO 31000:2018 risk management process, helping participants strengthen the skills they use in day-to-day risk assessment and management.

The emphasis is on making risk management useful in practice — supporting better decisions, clearer ownership and appropriate action.

Develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to:
Apply the principles of ISO 31000:2018 to risk management within a health and social care environment.
Define and describe risk clearly, taking account of objectives, context, risk appetite and organisational responsibilities.
Identify and assess risk systematically, considering hazards, likelihood, consequences and the effectiveness of existing controls.
Evaluate risk and make informed decisions about whether further action or escalation is required.
Develop proportionate risk treatment plans, identifying actions, ownership and measures to reduce or manage risk.
Record, communicate and monitor risk effectively, including understanding when risks require inclusion on organisational risk registers and how to review whether controls and actions are working.

Health and social care staff who conduct, contribute to or oversee risk assessment and risk management as part of their role.

The programme is particularly relevant to managers, team leaders, clinical and service leads, governance and risk staff, and others with responsibility for identifying, assessing or managing organisational risk.
Course Content
The programme follows the ISO 31000 risk management process, taking participants from understanding the context through to assessment, treatment and ongoing review.
CONTEXT – Understanding risk: Risk management in health and social care, ISO 31000 principles, roles and responsibilities and organisational risk appetite.
COMMUNICATE – Building shared ownership: Identifying and engaging the right stakeholders and creating an inclusive approach to risk ownership.
SCOPE – What are we trying to achieve?: Establishing scope, understanding internal and external context and defining appropriate criteria.
ASSESS – What might affect us?: Risk identification, analysis and evaluation, including the relationship between hazards, risks and controls.
TREAT – What should we do about it?: Identifying treatment options and developing practical risk treatment plans.
RECORD, MONITOR & REVIEW – Is it working?: Risk recording and reporting, risk registers, monitoring controls and actions, and escalation and de-escalation
Practical learning, grounded in real practice
The programme is designed to make risk management immediately relevant to participants’ day-to-day responsibilities.

Alongside worked examples and group exercises, participants are encouraged to bring real risks from their own areas of work and use the programme framework to work through them in a structured way.

This allows participants to apply the ISO 31000 approach to situations they genuinely face — clarifying the risk, considering existing controls, assessing likelihood and consequence, identifying further treatment options and deciding what action is required.

By working with both shared examples and their own risks, participants leave with a clearer understanding of how to apply the methodology in practice.
